Women Aren’t Stupid: Tell Renee Ellmers to Apologize

My name is Candice Davies, and I wanted to let you know about another outrageously offensively comment from Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.

Rep. Ellmers has a long history of being out of touch with North Carolina voters, but last week she went beyond the pale by telling her Republican colleagues that women are unable to understand topics like the national budget unless men “can bring it down to a woman’s level.”

“Men do tend to talk about things on a much higher level,” Ellmers said. “Many of my male colleagues, when they go to the House floor, you know, they’ve got some pie chart or graph behind them and they’re talking about trillions of dollars and how, you know, the debt is awful and, you know, we all agree with that. We need our male colleagues to understand that if you can bring it down to a woman’s level and what everything that she is balancing in her life — that’s the way to go.”

This is one of the most sexist comments I’ve ever heard from an elected official, and the fact that it was spoken by a women makes it no less offensive. Like many other women in North Carolina, I manage my household budget on a regular basis. Why does Ms. Ellmers think adding some extra zeroes onto the end makes a budget harder for women to understand.

Women don’t need to have complex topics dumbed down for them. Maybe Rep. Ellmers does, but she should speak for herself instead of insulting the intelligence of all women. Sign the petition asking Congresswoman Renee Ellmers to apologize for her offensive remarks.
