Tell the Department of Health & Human Services: Put Women's Health First

I want to protect women’s health and safety, and abortion care already is incredibly safe. The draft regulations proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services were written with extensive input from doctors, health care professionals and reproductive health experts, and they rely on evidence-based medicine. I urge the Department of Health and Human Services to continue to listen to medical experts and support sensible regulations that put women’s health first. The reproductive health centers affected by these draft regulations serve thousands of NC women and families and offer a wide range of essential reproductive health services, including family planning, STD testing and treatment, life-saving cancer screenings and annual well-woman exams. The Department of Health and Human Services must put women’s health and sound medical practices first when considering any changes to the draft regulations.

    Background

On December 1, 2014 the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released a set of draft regulations that apply only to abortion providers in NC, in accordance with SB 353 (aka the Motorcycle Abortion Bill) which lawmakers passed in 2013. Regulations like these--generally known as targeted regulation of abortion providers or TRAP law--are a commonplace legislative tactic designed to force women's health centers that offer abortion care to close their doors by imposing burdensome and medically unnecessary requirements. We believe it's critical that the same political interests that forced these rules to be written in the first place not compromise the rule-making process.  Join us in submitting a public comment and tell the Department of Health to continue to listen reproductive health care experts and put women's health first!
